Jakarta — The Ministry of Law welcomed the visit of the Director General of the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO), Daren Tang, on 11–13 August 2025 in Jakarta. The visit serves as a strategic momentum to strengthen bilateral cooperation in the protection and utilization of intellectual property (IP), with the goal of empowering Indonesian creators and innovators to compete in the global market.
Minister of Law, Supratman Andi Agtas, regarded the visit as a significant step forward in strengthening the national IP system. “We are committed to making intellectual property the foundation of a knowledge-based economic development. Our cooperation with WIPO will accelerate the formulation of a comprehensive and measurable national IP roadmap that serves the interests of all segments of society,” he stated at Graha Pengayoman on 11 August 2025.
During the meeting, the Minister proposed the initiation of the Indonesia’s Proposal to establish a balance between the interests of creators and society’s needs to enjoy creative works. This proposal was well received by Daren Tang, who encouraged Indonesia to present it directly at the Standing Committee on Copyright and Related Rights (SCCR) in Geneva in December 2025.
“This mechanism will give rise to an international regime that fosters a transparency-based copyright ecosystem, with the primary objective of building a fair balance between the rights of creators and global platforms that represent global consumers enjoying creative works,” Supratman said.
During his three-day visit to Indonesia, Daren Tang will also observe firsthand the support programs and capacity-building initiatives implemented by WIPO in collaboration with Directorate General of Intellectual Property (DGIP). He will also engage in discussions with government officials, industry players, academics, and creative communities to develop joint strategies for harnessing IP as a strategic tool to strengthen national competitiveness.
“Indonesia has immense potential to become a creative and innovative powerhouse. Through close cooperation, we can build an intellectual property ecosystem that drives inclusive and sustainable economic growth, particularly for young creators and MSMEs,” Daren Tang said at the start of his official visit.
One of the key items on the agenda is his attendance at the opening of The Cross-Regional Forum on IP and the Creative Economy: Connecting Creative Ecosystems of Asia and Latin America, which will take place as part of IPXpose on 13–16 August 2025 at SMESCO, Jakarta. This international forum brings together experts, policymakers, and creators from Asia and Latin America to promote dialogue and cross-regional collaboration in strengthening creative ecosystems.
The visit also follows up on the 2023 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between WIPO and DGIP, which led to the establishment of the Indonesia Intellectual Property Education (EKII) on 17 August 2024. EKII serves as a center for capacity building and professional development in the IP field. Discussions will focus on strengthening EKII’s role in producing human resources who understand and can optimize the use of IP.
One of the expected key outcomes is the formulation of a national IP roadmap that outlines strategic goals, priority projects, and long-term implementation plans. The roadmap will prioritize public education, capacity building for universities and industries, and the empowerment of micro, small, and medium enterprises through IP registration and commercialization.
The Ministry of Law encourages the public to actively protect their creations and innovations through formal IP registration, such as copyright, trademarks, patents, industrial designs, and geographical indications. IP protection not only grants exclusive rights to creators but also opens opportunities for commercialization that can enhance the value, reputation, and global reach of their works.
Through strengthened collaboration between the Ministry of Law via Directorate General of Intellectual Property and WIPO, Indonesia aims to develop a robust, inclusive, and sustainable innovation culture—positioning IP as a key driver of national progress in an increasingly competitive global landscape.
